Why the right COO can help your company reach your goals?
What is a COO?
A COO is short for Chief Operating Officer and is an executive who oversees a company’s day to day operations. Typically a COO is part of the executive board. While a CEO is responsible for the whole company’s success and strategy, the COO is typically responsible for the execution of the strategy.
What is a COO’s role in an organisation?
The main responsibilities of a COO is to oversee the company’s operational processes and systems, including production, logistics, and supply chain management. Overall, the COO is responsible for ensuring that the company’s day-to-day operations are running smoothly, efficiently, and in alignment with the company’s goals and objectives. While a CEO is responsible for setting a company’s strategy and goals and answers to the board, a COO is more operative and responsible for execution of the strategy.
So who does a COO oversee? This of course varies from organisation to organisation but typically many of the support functions are overseen by the COO. It could also be that a COO oversees the whole value chain and thus does not run their own unit as such.
When do you need a COO?
An organization typically needs a COO when it reaches a certain size or level of complexity, and requires a dedicated executive to oversee its day-to-day operations. Some of the key signs that an organization may need a COO include: rapid growth, expansion into new markets, operational inefficiencies, increased regulatory scrutiny or need for improved coordination.
Typically you do not see COO roles in very small organisations, but rather in organisations over 100 people.
What type of a background does a COO normally have?
Typically a COO has some experience under their belt. You might find a good COO candidate from unit leaders who may have run production or been responsible for finances for instance. In many cases a CFO might step in as a COO. It’s good to understand that a COO is a specialist on how organizations work and thus the knowledge on people, finances, the value chain and any industry specific regulations or laws is crucial.
How to find a great COO?
There’s currently quite a lot of competition on the job market for experienced leaders. Typically leaders of this rank are found with the help of a headhunter. It is also the way many leaders are accustomed to change jobs and they rarely browse job ads, but rather wait to be contacted or they contact a headhunter themselves.
At Compass HRG we recruit on average a leader a day. What we’ve noticed is that successful recruits are the result of careful match making. A good headhunter can read the hiring organization and see what the organization needs. On the other hand a good headhunter knows what kind of a person is motivated to jump into any given organization.
Effective recruitment, especially for a critical function, can be crucial to a business' success
